Family Support

In 1992, the Tennessee General Assembly passed legislation establishing a statewide Family Support Program. Statewide funding for this program is determined by our state legislators on a yearly basis. The program is administered by the State of Tennessee Department of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities  and managed by The Arc Williamson County. The program is designed to assist individuals with severe disabilities and their families to remain together in their homes and communities. Services provided include but are not limited to reimbursement for day care, respite care, specialized supplies, home and vehicle modifications, and equipment.  If you would like to apply for the program or need more information, please call Stephanie Smith at The Arc Williamson County at 615-790-5815, ext.3 or email sbbarc@thearcwc.org.

APPLYING FOR FAMILY SUPPORT 

The Arc Williamson County is accepting Family Support Applications for the 2017-2018 fiscal year.  In order to be considered for Family Support funding, we must have a completed, signed 2017-2018 Application and all needed proofs-proof of disability, proof of residency and proof of citizenship.  Proof of residency must be updated every year.  If we do not have a letter from your doctor stating that the disability is permanent and of life-long duration, then we must have updated proof of disability every year.  If we have proof of your citizenship from a previous year, then we do not need that again.  Please see the Family Support Handbook for what are acceptable forms of proofs.  After these are received by The Arc, you will be contacted so that we can determine if you will be eligible based on the state’s definition of disability.  You will then be notified in writing of your eligibility.  If you are found not eligible you will have 10 days to request a reconsideration.   Everyone who has a completed application and has been determined eligible will be submitted to the Family Support Local Council in May for approval based on availability of funds and local council priorities (these can be found in the Family Support Handbook).  If you are not approved for funding, you will be placed on a waiting list.  Should additional funding become available throughout the year, your non-identifying information would be presented to the Family Support Local Council for approval.  If your application is received after March 31st OR if the needed proofs are not provided until after March 31st, your eligibility will be determined; but you will be placed on the waiting list until additional funding should become available.  Please note that being eligible for funding and being approved for funding are two different processes.  Also, please understand that being a current recipient of Family Support does not make you automatically eligible the following year.  If you have any questions, please call Sharon Bottorff at 615-790-5815, ext 3 or e-mail at sbbarc@thearcwc.org.
